Solitude and passion, Mystical grandeur or rustic spirit, All of humanity - Bach is there, speaking to us, through the fingers and the Artistry of a player with whom he would without any shadow of a doubt have felt a great affinity : Suzanne Ramon.
The Six Suites for solo cello are all based on the same series of dances, opening with a Prelude, which immediately places the listener in the harmonic, indeed even psychological, atmosphere of the piece.
This is followed by : Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Menuet I and II (or Bourrée or Gavotte) and Gigue. The dances are in two parts, with each section played twice. The Suite format gives Bach a huge range of possibilities for varying the contrasts, the tones and the rhythms.
In spite of the similar structure throughout, each Suite has its own character, and an internal dynamic which is profoundly original. While detailed analysis reveals sumptuous treasures, those listening to them for the first time find them just as moving.
Is there any need to underline the beauty of the themes, the richness of their expression ?
This music speaks both to the heart and to the mind. Depending on the place, Bach gives us the most heartrending of confessions or the most light-hearted banter. |
