«Recorded in Moscow's Tchaikovsky concert hall, this recital amazes the listener with its musical intelligence and soloist Suzanne Ramon's commitment. The musicality of her Guarnierius cello proves its jubilantly expressive suppleness in Dvorak, Glazounov and Kaufmann.
A new Suzanne Ramon recital, cellist born in Budapest in 1946, student in Paris of the great André Navarra and protégée of Georges Cziffra, is always a moment of exceptional musicality. The cellist’s personal interpretation and insight prove to be of a remarkable sensitivity. Without a doubt the style and fervor express the mark of woman of experience and character.
The breathing, the unwavering precision of melody, the sense of phrasing, the underlying meaning, and the proffered murmur unveiled like a confession to the audience, all this testifies to a very special temperament.
The amazing beauty of her instrument, an Andreas Guarnierius from 1690, polishes the arabesque of feeling in the opening concerto: in this Opus 104 composed in New York, Dvorak speaks his tenderness, refusal of fatality, determination of renunciation and serene acceptance in the mode of hopeless exaltation … a curve towards the light that the second Lisztian piece, «Silent Woods», confirms. This is an interior song, an appeal to pacifying tranquility. The Glazounov («The Minstrel Song», opus 71) eschews the cheerful light for the world of enchantment and night. And lastly, in the « Cantabile» of Serge Kaufmann that sounds like the emotional outpouring after a still fresh wound, the superb color of Suzanne Ramon seems more agitated, but with a perfectly mastered flair. One has to be in awe of the sumptuous involvement of the cellist. The Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, in particular the woodwind instruments (clarinet, oboe and flutes), is in a fusional relationship with the inspired soloist, in a state of grace. A dazzling record.»
